You’ve probably seen this post coming. As I said in a previous post, the Grammys is the one award show that I actually look forward to. Simply put, I love music and music stars!
Music and advertising is a marriage made in heaven. An appropriate soundtrack can take a commercial to a new level. At the same time, music stars have so much clout that it makes sense to have them as spokespeople.
First up is the artist with the most nomination for tonight’s show: Eminem. Now, I won’t lie – at one point, I thought Eminem was no longer relevant. And then — boom! — just like that, he’s back on top, thanks to a good album and a monstrous collaboration with Rihanna.
At this year’s Super Bowl, two commercials featured Mr. Marshall Mathers. The first one, for Lipton Brisk, was not really effective. I see what they were going for, but I felt that it wasn’t as funny as it could have been. It wasn’t ironic enough.
The second Eminem commercial for Chrysler 200 was much more successful. What made it a great spot is that Eminem’s appearance in it makes sense. He’s from Detroit (a.k.a. Motor City) and his music fits with the message of the ad. This is easily one of the best commercials from this year’s Super Bowl.
We can’t talk about music artists appearing on commercials without mentioning Queen Bee – i.e. Ms. Beyonce Knowles. This gal is everywhere! She’s probably the most commercial music artist around.
Not judging her for taking on these projects, but I must say that some are more successful than others. I don’t get why Nintendo chose her for a campaign, but I see why she was chosen for American Express.
Recently, I’ve seen Beyonce’s commercial for L’Oreal Feria. It’s an amazing effort. It uses Beyonce’s hit “Naughty Girl”, a perfect fit for the TV commercial. I also love the parts where the video is slowed down to highlight the models. One word: sexy!
That’s it for now. I wish you a musical Sunday!
